CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

1. The School is intended for participants from the Baltic states, Belarus, Ukraine, Russian, and Central Europe, but also for those from Western Europe and North America. The School seeks to allow scholars to become acquainted with the latest research, new academic circles, and prominent specialists in the field, as well as to become familiar with resources in Polish archives and libraries. The School does not provide at opportunity to conduct independent research, but rather prepares participants for longer stays they may have in Poland in the future.

2. Participants may be university graduates, engaged in scholarly research, under the age of 39.

3. Participants are required to have a knowledge of both Polish and English sufficient to understand the lectures.

4. Because of this year's predominant theme, the School will give preference to candidates specializing in the study of states, cultures and nations of Eastern and Central Europe, particularly in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Candidates specializing in issues of the communist period and in current political developments in the region will also be given preference.

5. The complete cost of participation per person is SS 1,200 or its equivalent in Polish zloty.

6. Participants who complete all requirements set by the School will receive a "Diploma of the East European Summer School", University of Warsaw, Poland.



STIPENDS

1. Only candidates from Eastern and Central Europe who meet the School's basic requirements are eligible to apply for full or partial scholarships to cover costs of lodging, meals, lectures, and field trips.

2. A request for a stipend should accompany the candidate's application to the Summer School.

3. The stipend cannot cover transportation costs.



DOCUMENTS

1. Candidates are asked to forward the following documents:
- completed questionaire,
- application essay, to include a description of academic interests and written works,
- curriculum vitae and 2 photographs,
- complete bibliography of the candidate's own publications,
- two letters of recommendation from prominent scholars in the candidate's field of specialization,
- copy of university diploma.

2. Candidates are requested to supply their complete address as well as a fax number, and home and office telephone numbers.

3. The final deadline for receipt of applications is April 20, 2000.
Because of the short deadline, the questionnaire should first be sent by fax; all documentation, including the questionnaire, should then be sent by post.

4. Only complete applications meeting the deadline will be considered. Questionnaires, applications to the school, and requests for stipends should be submitted in Polish; the curriculum vitae should be written in English.

5. Documents will not be returned.



OTHER INFORMATION

1. Only a formal invitation issued by the University of Warsaw's Centre for East European Studies will permit the successful candidate to travel to and participate in the East European Summer School.

2. This prospectus and a poster for the East European Summer School have been published in Polish- and English language versions. We ask that they be made available to anyone interested.
